SOUTH AFRICA - EASTER ROAD DEATHS DOWN 41 PERCENT ON LAST YEAR

Transport Minister Blade Nzimande says police visibility has played a major role in reducing road deaths this Easter weekend.

The toll is down 41 percent compared to last year.

"Ideally, we wouldn't like to see a single soul lose their life on the road, but right now we are happy because nationally, in terms of fatalities, we are down 41 percent, which is very significant."

"We have managed to reduce the crashes and fatalities," he said.

Nzimande adds that there have been far fewer crashes that included large vehicles.

"We are pleased, although we are concerned about the weather. We just want people to be cautious and keep a safe distance"

The transport minister was speaking at the Marianhill Toll Plaza in KZN.
