Five pedestrians were allegedly mowed down by a speeding blue Fiat Uno in Phalo Street, KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage on Tuesday evening.
The victims, aged between 31 and 40, were sitting on the grass near the road at the time of the incident and were taken to Uitenhage Provincial Hospital in two ambulances.
Three were treated and discharged, but the remaining two were transferred to Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth.
The police have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving, with a possibility of additional charges at a later stage of the investigation.
They appeal to anyone who can assist the investigation to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Mark Rhodes, on 041 978 8800.
