PORT ELIZABETH - CONSTRUCTION COMPANY DIRECTORS ACCUSED OF R46 MILLION TAX FRAUD

Two directors of a Port Elizabeth-based construction company appeared in the city's Commercial Crimes Court this week on charges of tax fraud amounting to approximately R46m.

Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Anelisa Ngcakani, said 65-year-old Yasmena Pillay and 55-year-old Rafiek Davids, were arrested on Wednesday and appeared in court on the same day.

She said it is alleged that the construction company had failed to submit Value Added Tax returns to the SA Revenue Service between 2010 and 2017.  She did not identify the firm.

"The Hawks' investigation has further revealed that the said company is not registered as an employer at SARS," said Captain Ngcakani.

The pair were granted bail of R1000 each and will be back in court again on 13 August.
