UITENHAGE - WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER POLICE MAKE MACABRE DISCOVERY OF BURNT NEWBORN BABY REMAINS

A 26-year-old Uitenhage woman was arrested after the partially burnt remains of a newborn baby was found inside a rubbish bin in Kwanobuhle on Friday morning.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli, said the gruesome discovery was made by a police patrol after a report was received that the body of a baby was possibly hidden in the bins in Ndulula Street.

"On arrival at the scene, as it was a municipal refuse collection day, several rubbish bins were lined-up on the street for collection.  Inside one of the bins, police recovered partially burnt remains of a new-born baby boy," Nkohli said.

He said according to information the woman had given birth on Tuesday and later that same day a "witness heard the sound of a screaming baby and thereafter saw a suspect making fire at the backyard."

He said after a few days a suspicious member of the public alerted other residents who summoned the police.

Nkohli said the woman is due to appear in the KwaNobuhle Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of murder.

He said additional charges could still be brought against the woman.
