A G4S security guard was shot and injured in a cash in transit heist which occurred at about 07:50 this morning. It is alleged that as the two guards exited a chain store in a shopping complex in Commercial Road, Sidwell, when they were confronted by four armed men.

Shots were fired in the foyer and one of the guards was wounded. The suspects escaped through the back alley with an unknown amount of cash. A civilian who witnessed what had happened, also fired at the fleeing robbers. The men escaped in a white Toyota Hilux bakkie. Two firearms belonging to the guards were also taken (9mm pistol and a LM5 rifle). The injured guard was taken to hospital for treatment.

The festive season is upon us and businesses and chain stores are urged to be extra vigilant with cash handled on the premises. It is advised to change the routine and vary times when depositing cash in the banks or through armed transit security. Stores are also advised to employ extra security during opening, closing and peak hours of business. Always treat people with suspicion and immediately report unusual behaviour of individuals in the vicinity. Never open the store if there is an inkling of suspicion.
