Chaos erupted at the Wool exchange building in Port Elizabeth on Thursday afternoon when ANC and DA councillors became involved in a heated argument during a Council meeting.
AlgoaFM News was told that the ANC, which now fills the opposition benches in Council, had objected strongly to an item on the so-called green paper, which is a confidential document and not open to public scrutiny.
Glass jugs on the tables were apparently thrown and DA MMC for Roads and Transport, Rayno Kayser, suffered a heavy gash to the head. A woman councillor is believed to have either passed out or fainted during the fracas.
A cartridge was found on the chamber floor and it would appear that a warning shot was fired by a security guard in the council chambers.
Police have been summoned and spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg confirmed that the SAPS would be investigating the matter.
