PORT ELIZABETH - 8 CARS HAVE BEEN STONED AT NMMU

At least eight cars have been stoned at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality University(NMMU) as protests continue at the institution on Thursday.

According to reports, one student has been arrested so far.

“The main springboard for the student attacks is from the Madiba Shirt area and has moved from the back of the university towards the front of South Campus.

“Police are on the scene. North Campus has been secured,” said NMMU in a statement.

Some students have expressed fear for their safety due to heavy deployment of police at the Letaba North Campus residence. Students residing at the campus said they were awaken by sounds of gunshots as police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at students.

Meanwhile, Several students who were arrested on Wednesday are expected to appear at the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court.

Eight of the students who were arrested at the entrance to the university in terms of the Regulation of Gatherings Act and the contravention of a court order on Tuesday, were released on bail set at R200 at the George Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The bail conditions include that students should not partake in ongoing student protests.
