PORT ELIZABETH - POLICE MAKE BREAKTHROUGH WITH ARREST IN SHOCKING STUDENT HIJACKING/ RAPE/ MURDER CASE

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of an NMMU EMS student and the rape of his female companion.

An 18-year-old teenager will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 24 August 2016 on a charge of rape, murder and hijacking.

The suspect was arrested on Monday, 22 August 2016 in Kwazakhele. The suspect was positively identified and was found in possession of the complainant’s belongings.

He was arrested by the Task and Tracking team that was set up to investigate the case. Four suspects are still being sought by police and the tracking team has been increased to 7 members. The SAPS is satisfied with the progress made thus far in the investigation and recognises the dedication displayed by the two teams tracking the suspects.

Qualified medic and student Thabani Ngwekazi, 28, was killed shortly after he and a fellow student were hijacked earlier this month.

The two students were hijacked and kidnapped from outside Varsity Park student residences in North End at about 9.30pm on August 14.

During the horror ordeal, Ngwekazi was shot dead and his 21-year-old friend raped, but eventually freed.

The body of the single father from Mthatha was recovered from the sea at Brighton Beach the following day.
