PORT ELIZABETH - NMMU HAS SUSPENDED ALL ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES TILL FURTHER NOTICE

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) has postponed all academic activities and tests scheduled to be written on Tuesday.

This follows the uncertainty on its campuses as students meet to discuss various issues such as fees and outsourcing.

Both Missionvale and George campuses will also cease all academic activities on Tuesday.

The University said it will continue to update its community further with regards to the ongoing discussion and engagement with the South African Students’ Congress(Sasco) leadership.

Sasco embarked on a mass protest last week Monday, over funding crisis, outsourcing of workers and withholding of students June examination results.

“All students must convene at the South Campus entrance (Main Gate). Sasco is going to submit a detailed memorandum of demands to the University Management today. The memorandum will table all of the outstanding issues and provide a way forward in dealing with them,” Sasco said last week Tuesday.

The institution said management has been engaged all day with various groups towards seeking solutions to the many #FeesMustFall student and staff related issues raised.

“NMMU management has been engaged with union and task team representatives in an attempt to resolve this unsatisfactory security situation. Without the committed and comprehensive presence of protection service employees around our campuses, the safety and security of staff, students and facilities is compromised,” said the institution.
