PORT ELIZABETH - ALLEGED INTERNATIONAL PERLEMOEN SMUGGLING KINGPIN GRANTED BAIL OF R250 000

The man the Hawks believe is a kingpin behind an international abalone smuggling syndicate has been granted bail in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court.

Morné Blignaut (45) was granted bail of R250,000, while three co-accused were given bail of R20,000 each on Friday.

One of the alleged syndicate members, Jacob Naumann, was denied bail following an earlier arrest in another abalone case.

The five were part of a group of people arrested by the Hawks recently following a two-year probe into the syndicate, which they says has ties to China.
