EASTERN CAPE - NO DEAL MADE YET BETWEEN TAXI OPERATORS AND EC GOVERNMENT

The Eastern Cape government is yet to broker a deal with taxi operators over a permit related dispute.

South Africa National Taxi Council (Santaco) affiliated taxi drivers and owners caused a standstill in several Eastern Cape towns yesterday blocking major roads.

The strike left hundreds of commuters stranded and forced the Education Department to postpone exams because learners could not be ferried to school.

Eastern Cape spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo says the premier has a follow up meeting with Santaco leadership today.

“The premier has committed to discuss and find solutions to the problem. They made allegations during the meeting with the premier accusing the Department of Transport of not giving operators permits and only prioritising bus owners.”
Eighteen people were arrested on arson, public violence and malicious damage to property charges.
