EASTERN CAPE - HAWKS ALLEGE MONEY STOLEN BY EC MAYOR MAY AMOUNT TO R5 MILLION

The Hawks say the amount of money allegedly stolen by an Eastern Cape mayor could be as much as R5 million.

Amathole District Municipality mayor Nomasikizi Khonza allegedly authorised the payments, in the pretence the money would be donated to a beauty pageant.

The mayor is also accused of spoiling herself with two cars in one month.

She, and several others, were arrested earlier this week and subsequently released on bail.

They are scheduled to appear in court again in July.

The Hawks’ Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said, “We are talking in excess of about R2 million but investigations are continuing. So there is talk that it might reach R5 million.”
