Through crime prevention operations that were conducted over the past weekend, police officials in the Uitenhage Cluster have arrested a total of 135 suspects. The operations were conducted from Friday, 22 April 2016 until 06:00, this morning, Monday, 25 April 2016.
Two suspects (ages 35 and 39-years-old) were arrested on a charge of house robbery and the vehicle (and all the stolen items) that were taken during the house robbery was also recovered. Three (3) suspects were arrested after police found three unlicensed firearms and ammunition in their possession. Two suspects were arrested after they were linked to two separate cases of business robberies that occurred earlier in the week. One wanted suspect was also traced and successfully apprehended. A total of 24 traffic fines were issued, valued at R12 000. Other arrests made related to housebreaking and theft, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, possession of suspected stolen goods, robbery common, etc. Two (2) arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor. 19 people were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession. One illegal tavern was closed for selling liquor without a license and fifteen premises were searched and 400L of vile concoction were destroyed. A total of 60 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes.
Police in the Uitenhage Cluster will continue to proactively and reactively address crime effectively in the Uitenhage Cluster. The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property.
