PORT ELIZABETH - DANNY JORDAAN SPENT FIRST 100 DAYS IN OFFICE "DODGING SCANDALS"

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality mayor Danny Jordaan has come under fire from the Democratic Alliance (DA) which claims he spent his first hundred days in office ‘dodging scandals’ instead of honouring his promises.

Jordaan, who is also South African Football Association (Safa) president, took over the leadership of the council in May as the African National Congress (ANC) looks to keep control of it ...in next year’s election.

He had promised to tackle corruption, maladministration and a rise in gang violence.

DA mayoral candidate Athol Trollip says this has not happened.

“What Danny Jordaan says and does are two different things. Here is an opportunity to hold an official to account prosecute him on the 17 charges they have against him and if he’s found guilty, fire the man. But because all those municipal managers have been deployed there instead of holding them to account, each one of them has been given the golden handshake.”

In July, Jordaan’s office said he was in talks to increase the number of police officers deployed in gang-infested areas in the city.

It was part of an intervention to tackle gangsterism in Port Elizabeth.

Jordaan’s spokesperson Mlungisi Ncame said the mayor spent almost a week visiting some of the metro’s worst affected areas, including Korsten.

The appointment was part of a leadership reshuffle in the municipality following a visit by President Jacob Zuma to Port Elizabeth in May.

Jordaan took up the position of Safa president in 2013.

He headed up South Africa’s bid to host and organise the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

The ANC confirmed that Jordaan will retain his role at Safa in addition to his new post.
