PORT ELIZABETH - ARMED ROBBER SWIFTLY OVERPOWERED BY SHOP OWNER AND ARRESTED

A brave Port Elizabeth shop owner and his assistant apprehended a suspect who threatened them with a firearm and demanded money.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu says a 30-year-old man was behind the counter of his shop in Walmer location on Friday when an unknown man walked in and took items off the shelf.

She says the suspect then pulled out a firearm and ordered the shop owner to open the gate behind the counter.

The owner called out to his assistant, who was at the back of the shop.

Naidu says the suspect demanded money and when he was denied, he hit the assistant on the head with the firearm.

She says the two of them attacked the suspect and managed to overpower him, and pinned him down.

The assistant went for help, and the 20-year-old man was arrested and charged with attempted business robbery.

He will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrate's court on Monday.
