PORT ELIZABETH - NEWLY ACTIVATED ANTI-GANG UNIT HAS BROUGHT ABOUT A "SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN GANG-RELATED MURDERS" IN NORTHERN AREAS

Eastern Cape police say the Anti-Gang Unit has made positive strides in stabilising the gang-plagued northern areas of Port Elizabeth.

In a statement on Friday, Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga, said that since the inception of operations on 1 July;  "a significant reduction in gang-related murders and attempted murders is noticed."

She said these operations entailed a door-to-door, street-to-street and house-to-house campaign.

General Ntshinga said the seizure of firearms and contraband had also helped to "destabilise' gang activity.

She said their efforts resulted in the recovery of 24 firearms, 205 rounds of ammunition and the seizure of drugs that included dagga, mandrax and Tik.

Four suspects were arrested on charges of murder, five for attempted murder, nine for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and 32 for drug-related cases.

General Ntshinga once again called on residents to stand united and support Police efforts in combating "the common enemy", which she said is crime.
