PORT ELIZABETH - POLICE EXPLOSIVE EXPERTS DIFFUSE BOMB AT KWAZAKHELE FILLING STATION AFTER ATTEMPTED ROBBERY

Police explosive experts spent the morning defusing a bomb left behind at the scene of an attempted robbery in Kwazakhele.

The bomb – packed inside a tog bag – was found just metres from the drop safe in the back office of the BP filling station in Salamntu Street.

Police spokesman Constable Mncedi Mbombo said four suspects entered the filling station at about 6.30am. A fifth suspect waited in the getaway vehicle.

Alert passersby, noticing something was amiss, contacted police and it is believed the suspects – realising suspicions had been raised – fled, leaving the bomb behind.

Mbombo said the filling station and immediate surroundings were evacuated by 7am and the bomb defused by 8.30am.
