EASTERN CAPE - EC TRANSPORT MEC TO MEET RIVAL TAXI ASSOCIATIONS BORDER ALLIANCE & UNCEDO TAXI ASSOCIATION

Eastern Cape Safety and Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana and Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Liziwe Ntshinga are expected to meet with two taxi associations believed to at loggerheads in Libode.

The urgent meeting follows the outbreak of more fatal taxi violence that has claimed more than 25 lives since March last year.

Five people have been killed and scores of people have been hospitalised in the past seven days.

The intervention of the Transport and Safety provincial office to resolve the impasse between Border Alliance and Uncedo Taxi Association may be a solution to end the on-going taxi war on the R61 between Mthatha and Port St Johns.

Several people including taxi operators and commuters have lost their lives since it began last year. Scores of minibus taxis have been torched.

In the on-going war, commuters are at the receiving end. Police have been deployed to monitor every move on the R61.
