A Port Elizabeth couple, who found two men inside their house in La Roche Drive, Humewood, when they returned home from shopping yesterday, were left bruised after a confrontation with the thieves.
Police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the 83-year-old man and his wife, 56, went shopping at about 12.40pm.
“It seems the culprits gained access through a back window, where they forced the burglar bars open with a crowbar,” she said.
“When the couple came home, the burglars confronted them, sprayed the wife with pepper-spray and tied both of them up.”
The wife managed to press her panic button, which sounded the alarm. This caused the burglars to flee. However, the thieves made off with some jewellery. A case of house robbery is being investigated.
