PORT ELIZABETH - MOUNT ROAD CLUSTER SEES 155 CRIMINALS ARRESTED OVER THE PAST WEEKEND

The following successes were achieved during this weekend (14-17 October 2016) in the Mount Road policing cluster.  A total of 155 suspects were arrested for various crimes including possession of drugs, robbery, drunken driving, possession of suspected stolen property, murder, attempted murder, theft from motor vehicle, house robbery, unlawful possession of firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

All arrested persons are expected to appear in court soon.

A total of 50 arrests were made on drug-related cases for the past week. Suspects were charged for either possession of drugs or dealing in drugs. The arrests were executed during routine patrols and stop-and-search operations. Seven arrests were also made during the week for unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition. Ten people were arrested for drunken driving this weekend.

All the drug related cases were effected whist members were engaged in stop and search in the cluster.

On Saturday, 15 October 2016 at about 09:50 members from SAPS Gelvandale responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle in Liebenberg Street. As the members were following the vehicle, the driver and passenger alighted from the vehicle in an attempt to flee from police. The police officer saw the passenger disposing of a firearm. A 9mm pistol with 2 rounds of ammunition was recovered and a 29 year suspect arrested. The firearm was reported stolen in Bethelsdorp this month.

On the same day, at about 19:20, 5 suspects aged bet 17-25 years old was arrested by Bethelsdorp Vispol members. While patrolling Ext 31in Bethelsdorp, the members noticed a Toyota Corolla with 5 occupants. Due to the number of people in the car, police became suspicious and stopped the vehicle. The vehicle was cornered in Biscuit street. The driver was seen opening the door, also disposing of a firearm. All five suspects detained on unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. An Astra pistol and 8 rounds seized.

Police are warning driver’s to be responsible and not to drive while under the influence of alcohol. With the festive season fast approaching, police will be clamping down on drunken drivers.
