PORT ELIZABETH - 2 ANC COUNCILLORS GRANTED BAIL & TO APPEAR IN COURT JANUARY FOR NMB COUNCIL BRAWL

Two ANC Nelson Mandela Bay council members, Andile Lungisa and Gamalihleli Maqula have been granted R1000 bail each by the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court.

This after they handed themselves over to the police.

They face charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following a fight last week during a closed sitting of the metro council.

A shot was also fired into the roof of the council chambers during the fracas.

It is still unknown who fired the shot.

It is alleged Lungisa hit DA councillor, Rano Kayser over the head with a glass jug.

And Maqula allegedly assaulted DA Chief Whip, Werner Senekal, with a sharp object.

It also emerged in court that Maqula has a previous conviction for assault.

The ANC says it will also lay counter charges against certain DA councillors.

ANC Chief Whip, NMB council, Litho Suka says, “We are going to abide and follow the procedures from what happened today. We are glad that the law has taken its course ... There are some bail conditions but we will see to it everything is done procedurally.”

The DA-led coalition in the metro says the law must take its course.

The case has been postponed to the 17th of January 2017.

The investigation into the matter continues.
