EASTERN CAPE - QUEENSTOWN POLICE LAUNCH MANHUNT AFTER ELDERLY COUPLE BEATEN & MURDERED ON THEIR FARM

A murder case is being investigated by the Queenstown Organised Crime unit following the murder and assault of an elderly couple at their farm in Maclear.

It is alleged that yesterday 26 October 2016 at about 18:00 five men approached a farm worker at Rustig farm, about 8 km outside Maclear and indicated that they wanted to buy some cattle. The farm worker referred them to the owner 74-year-old Mr Louis Van den Berg, who showed them to the gate of the farm. After a while the farm worker heard screams and went to investigate.

The suspects chased him and took him to the farm house, where they demanded the keys to the safe. After a struggle, which left Mrs van den Berg injured, they got access to the safe and took several firearms and fled on foot after they tied up the worker and Mrs Van den Berg.

The worker managed to untie himself and contacted the family members who then alerted the police. Mrs Van Den Berg was taken to hospital for medical attention and Mr Van Den Berg’s body was found at the gate of the yard, alleged to have been assaulted and stabbed.

Anyone who can assist the police with any information which can lead to the arrest of the suspects can contact the Investigating Officer, Captain Nkampini on 071 481 2686 or the nearest police station.

Information can also be shared anonymously at SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or via SMS to Crime Line 32211. All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
