STUTTERHEIM - GRANDMOTHER CHARGED WITH MURDER AFTER TODDLER'S BODY FOUND IN RIVER

The body of a 16-month-old baby boy has been found in Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape, police said on Thursday.

Abukhanyisile Sitebisa’s body was discovered by community members at about 4pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Captain Siphokazi Mawisa said the child’s body was found in the river between Stutterheim and the Mlungisi informal settlement.

“Abukhanyisile Sitebisa was abandoned by his grandmother on 19 June 2016 and was reported to police. The 42 year old Xoliswa Sitebisa was arrested and appeared at Stutterheim Magistrate’s Court on 30 June 2016 and remanded in custody”, she said.

Police had been searching for the boy since his grandmother reported him missing.

She will now be charged with murder and will appear in the Stutterheim Magistrate’s Court on July 19.

Police are still investigating the child’s cause of death.
