Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Dr Danny Jordaan welcomed Eastern Cape company Auto Motorcycles’ R40 million investment announcement on Friday (8 July).
Known for his acumen to bolster investor confidence, the first citizen was purposely invited to the company’s Heugh Road premises to personally inform him of plans to develop a 4 000 square meter piece of land next to the William Moffett Expressway to house a major retail outlet known as Queen Motor Spares. KTM Motorcycles will also be sold there and other tenants will be announced at a later stage.
Mayor Jordaan thanked the company for the investment and said: “The fact that you are expanding is a major indicator of what is happening in Nelson Mandela Bay over the last couple of months.
“ Volkswagen South Africa is investing R4,5 billion, Goodyear R670 million, FAW is expanding as well and local company Billson Trucks recently announced a R100 million investment.
“Now we have another investment in the bike sector. It is welcome news for our Metro. If you look at Detroit where the motor industry is in decline, in our city you see greater confidence and investment in the automotive sector.
In addition we are also looking at diversifying our economy by growing the ocean economy, the creative economy and the township economy,” said Mayor Jordaan.
With its head office in Queenstown, Auto Motorcycles has been in operation for 40 years. The local franchise was opened in 1999 in Albany Road and moved to Heugh Road in 2007.
“The mayor was very encouraged by our investment in the city as we are planning for the future. Overall, I think the mayor was very happy about our new and exciting adventure.” said Sach Pillay, Auto Motorcycles Dealer Principal.
