PORT ELIZABETH - SWIFT POLICE ACTION BRINGS HIJACK SUSPECTS TO JUSTICE IN GELVANDALE

Alertness and swift action by members of the PE Flying squad resulted in the speedy arrest of two suspects. It is alleged that on Sunday, 15 May 2016 at about 07:10 members received information of an attempted hijacking in the Gelvandale area. The description of the suspect vehicle was circulated and within minutes the vehicle was spotted speeding by the Flying squad members in Standford Road.

A chase ensued as the blue VW Polo attempted to evade police. Police succeeded in bringing the vehicle to a halt. Upon searching the vehicle, a Pietro Beretta 9mm pistol was found hidden under the driver’s seat inside a draw. Both suspects aged 26 and 28 years old was arrested and detained on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm. They are expected to appear in court soon.

The use of firearms in most instances are involved in serious violent crimes. Gang related violence, drug trafficking, aggravated robbery, domestic violence and rapes are mostly carried out with firearms.  Police is urging the communities to blow the whistle on persons who are in possession of stolen (illegal) firearms as well as those who are using firearms in the commission of crimes.
