An Eastern Cape mayor, who allegedly stole more than R2 million under the pretence the money was going to be donated to a beauty pageant, will not be suspended.
Amathole District Municipality Mayor Nomasikizi Konza was arrested by the Hawks on Monday and has been released on R15,000 bail.
The Amathole District Municipality says Konza, who is implicated in a multi-million fraud scandal, will remain in her position.
The municipality’s Sandla Mtintsilana says the allegations that Konza signed off on R2 million for a beauty pageant which never happened, first have to be tested in court.
The Hawks also claim, before her arrest, Konza splashed out on two cars in one month.
Konza, and seven others arrested with her, have subsequently been released on bail and are scheduled to appear in court again on 18 July.
