A man has died following a fall from Van Stadens bridge at 4:30pm this afternoon. The man was seen by passing motorists dangling from the bridge before the fall.
He has since been identified as Port Elizabeth resident Jerome Mafeking, 37.
This was the first suicide off the bridge after a barrier was erected in 2013.
Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli said Mafeking was believed to have climbed over the barrier.
“There is no car in the immediate vicinity so it is not yet clear how he got to the bridge. At this stage no foul play is suspected and an inquest investigation is underway,” Nkohli said.
Mafeking’s body was recovered by the police search and rescue unit shortly after the incident.
