PORT ELIZABETH - 2 EASTERN CAPE POLITICIANS APPEARED IN PE MAGISTRATE'S COURT FOR ALLEGED DRUNK DRIVING CHARGES

Two top officials appeared in the Port Elizabeth magistrate’s court on Monday on charges of drunk driving.

African National Congress (ANC) member of parliament, Mlungsi Johnson, and Nelson Mandela Bay economic development executive director, Anele Qaba, were arrested for allegedly driving while over the legal alcohol limit.

The pair were arrested after they crashed into each other in Allister Miller Drive in Forest Hill on Sunday.

Qaba appeared briefly in court on Monday. According to the charge sheet, he faces charges which include driving under the influence of liquor and excessive amount of alcohol in blood.

The case against him was postponed until May 31 for blood test results.

Johnson made a brief court appearance separately. He too faces charges of driving under the influence of liquor and excessive amount of alcohol in blood.

Johnson, who was driving a grey Mercedes-Benz, also faces an additional charge of reckless and negligent driving.

The charge sheet indicated that he was allegedly “driving in the lane of oncoming traffic hereby causing an accident.”

The case against Johnson was postponed until May 31 for blood test results and for him to appoint a defence lawyer.

Both men were previously released on bail of R1000.
