The SAPS Management in the Eastern Cape expressed their deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Warrant Officer Mzwanele Tukani, 45, attached to Mthatha Stock Theft. “Our hearts go out to his loved ones and close colleagues during this difficult time. SAPS will provide all the support possible to the bereaved family,” said Lt General Celiwe Binta.
It is alleged that Warrant Officer Tukani had gone to investigate a case in Mandela Park on 11 March 2016 at about 20:00 when he was shot and injured by unknown assailants. He was shot in the upper body and was also robbed of his state firearm and the cell phone. He later succumbed to the wounds in hospital.
At this stage, we cannot speculate the motive for the shooting.
Warrant Officer Tukani joined the SAPS on 13 September 1993. He leaves behind his wife and three children, two daughters and a son.
Police investigation is continuing. SAPS appeals to anyone who can assist with the information that can lead to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of the suspects, to contact Warrant Officer Maqhubela 082 779 7268 or SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10 111 or Crime Line 3 22 11. All information will be treated as confidential.
“Any person who attacks or kills a police official will face the full might of the law as an attack on or murder of a police official is a threat to our constitutional democracy and rob our communities of their protectors. This should not be taken lightly. We will however, not be deterred in our determination to fight crime. We urge communities to work with us, in sharing information about the whereabouts of criminal(s) involved in this heinous crime,” concluded Lt General Celiwe Binta.
