UITENHAGE - CRIME PREVENTION OPERATIONS SEES 273 CRIMINALS BROUGHT TO JUSTICE

A total of 273 suspected criminals were arrested in the Uitenhage Cluster over the New Year weekend.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Gerda Swart said the arrests came during a series of crime prevention operations from Thursday (31/12/2015) to this morning (04/01/2016).

“A total of 47 traffic fines to the value of R22 300 were issued. Thirteen people were arrested on charges of driving under the influence of liquor and 93 people were arrested on less serious offences, such as drinking in a public place, urinating in a public place and so on,” she said.

Other arrests include those for theft, burglary, murder, attempted murder, possession of suspected stolen goods, illegal possession of drugs and assault with the intention to do grievous bodily harm.

“The main purpose of the operation is to address crime effectively in the area,” Swart added.
All those arrested are due to appear in the various magistrates’ courts today (04/01/2016) and tomorrow (05/01/2016).
