PORT ELIZABETH - CABLE THIEF BURNT AND HOSPITALIZED

A man has been severely burnt and taken to hospital after an alleged failed cable theft attempt caused a substation to explode and cut power to central suburbs of Port Elizabeth on Monday morning.
Municipal spokesperson Roland Williams said the M&S substation, located in Evatt Street in Central, had blown at around 10:00 on Monday. This then caused an electricity outage over the PE Central area.

"Our technicians attended to the problem by isolating the substation and rerouting supply to the affected areas from other sub-stations," he said.

Williams said the municipality was currently investigating an attempted cable theft at the substation, which is most likely the cause for the explosion and subsequent electrical outage.

"It appears that the security of the M&S Substation was breached and one of the suspects was burnt," he said.

Williams said the man had been taken to hospital.

Power had since been restored to the area.
